Inch by Inch

Inch by Inch, I am clearing the backlog on The Desk of Endless Tasks.  With all the bad weather over the last few weeks, I have gotten just a little behind.  The Desk and I still have to sit down and pick out new merchandise.  Happily, I have a little time to find some new stuff. https://www.cafepress.com/gtrmerchandise/14488659

Editing is going well.  Several books are now in various stages of the process.  Yes, please keep buying books and we can afford to make more.

Video editing has finally managed to claw its way up the top of The Desk of Endless Tasks.  So much stuff to do and so little time.  Hopefully, this means I will have a lot more projects wrapped up.

Last but certainly not least – the brine shrimp are doing fine.  They are getting bigger every day and starting to swim like tiny brine shrimp are supposed to.

Welcome to the Tundra …

Or at least a reasonable facsimile thereof.  The Intergalactic Truck of Hauling and I have rolled more than 350 miles in the last two days through this freezing mess.  People had to be picked up and dropped off – everywhere.  I am fairly certain I have seen at least on Yeti lurking around the house.  Okay, it might have been a neighbor’s cat, but it was dark, I was tired and cold – so in my mind – Yeti.  You get the picture.  I also got around to refilling the bird feeder after knocking all the ice off of it and let’s just say my lovely forest of banana trees is in the “not so much” department.  However, sooner or later, we will thaw out and move on with the weather.

Thanks to everyone listening to the Geek Tank Radio show.  We have achieved true international status with more people listening  in every day and from all over the world.  http://www.geektankradio.com

At Dark Oak Press, we have several new releases in the works.  I will be posting more about them as we get closer to done on the projects.  Happily, I am closing in on being done with the portable (and downloadable) murder mystery party game.  Look for more details on that coming very soon.  Seminar – we got a lot of seminars coming up all over the Mid-South.  Check out the Dark Oak Press Blog for more information.

Sea Monkey Update – the baby brine shrimp are doing fine.  You can almost make them out with the naked eye, but they are in there swimming around living the brine shrimp version of the good life.

The Wolf Moon

Our new year rings in under the full Wolf Moon.  It is a clear and very cold night.  While the reality is that tomorrow is not really any different than any other day, mentally, it is the start of a new year.  We get to look forward to the possibilities of of all that stuff we haven’t done from last year.  Currently, I am sitting here at The Desk Of Endless Tasks while the temp outside drops to stupid cold levels.  The Murder To Go game is nearly complete.  Everything about the game itself is done.  Now working on the gloriously painful part, the instructions.  The beta version is out at the readers.  I am now waiting on the questions and comments to roll in.

Hopefully, I will get over working everywhere else 80 hours a week and I will get back to my own projects.  As I am fond of saying, so much mischief, so little time.  So many great ideas populate numerous post-it notes in a pile on the desk.  It would indeed be a banner year if I could turn these ideas into finished works.

2018, I look forward to you with an eye to The Amazing Order Of Done.  You are greeted by a fabulous full moon thus you are rolling in with some fanfare.  Well, with a bit of hard work and a smidge of good luck, this will be a better year for all of us.

The Amazing Order of Done

This past week which. by the way was the living embodiment of the the great Monty Python skit “The Spanish Inquisition” except they did not bring the “Comfy Chair”, has reminded me to get back to my deeper, darker business beliefs.  As a founding member of The Amazing Order of Done, I have been repeating to myself all week the basic mantra – Do Not Confuse Effort With Results.

Sometimes, getting so overwhelmed by what all you have to get done,  you drop all the trappings of “trying” or “attempting”.  All you have time for is the most streamlined way of getting to a solution.  The simple beauty of no-holds-barred brutality of just plain and simple getting a task done.  I have noticed that a lot of the trappings of normal society have been sneaking back into my personal processes.  If you are truly honest with yourself, you will have to admit that many of the things we are actually sub-consciously doing many steps due to “Legacy” processes.

desk2mousepadLegacy process – the best example I can give of how entrenched this can be comes from many years ago when I was an instructor at a technology teaching facility.  Because of our location all Saturday classes began at 8 am.  During the week, classes began at 9 am.  I taught numerous Saturday classes so the timing was no big deal to me, but the clients could get a bit testy about having to be up that early on a weekend.  A few months later, the entire facility moved into it’s own building.  Not long after the move, the general manager (GM) came to me and asked if I could do a Saturday class.  I said no problem and that I would see the class at 9 am.  The GM said no – class started at 8.  I asked him why and he responded that “They turn off the air at 4 pm.”  I said,”No, class started at 9.  The GM looked at me like I was an idiot.  Then I asked, “Who turns off the air in here.  We own the building and the thermostat.  Are you going to sneak in here of Sat and turn of the electricity?  The look on the GM’s face was beyond priceless when if hit him that he had mentally transferred the legacy way of doing business with the old location and our new building.  I told me to let those poor people sleep in a bit.

So, review how you do things and see if there are any “Legacy Methods” holding you back.

Slowly I typed …

It is wonderful to be at The Desk of Endless Tasks again.  I am afraid there has been a delay in operations after the MCFC convention due to con crud induced coma.

MCFC at the Guest House was a wonderful time for me.  The Living Cartoon was a lot of fun.  I saw lots of old fans and met some great new ones.  There was plenty of mirth, mayhem, and madness to go around.  We even got a chance to play test the new murder mystery game and it was blast.

Then I got home.  I was mostly okay through pirate sword class on Tuesday, but I seemed to fail to wake up Wednesday, or Thursday, or Friday.  I think I might have been a little tired.  Saturday and Sunday were only slightly better.  Happily, today has been mostly functional.  So, hundreds of emails and messages have now been plowed through.  I have even caught up on the bills.

Even though I have been method acting Rip Van Winkle, The Desk of Endless Tasks has been backing up with lots of new and wonderful projects.  Tomorrow, there shall be a shift in the gravitational center of the almighty desk and there shall be productivity.

and a brand new pair of Battle Axes

It is amazing what can make you smile.  Currently, a favorable turn of events has gifted me with a couple of extra days to prep for the MCFC convention in Memphis this weekend.  This year, my main role besides being a generally entertaining pain in the neck to Brandon in programming is to be the voice of the arch villain The Diaper Destroyer in this year’s living cartoon.  I am looking forward to playing a character that looks like the Sith version of Captain Underpants.

The Desk of Endless Tasks and I have some very big plans for this week.  I am going to be a bit vague, but more books and video are on the way.

I love being a writer and a performer.  It means you can have the weirdest assortment of junk in your truck and you have a nearly reasonable story as to why the stuff is there.  For instance, I do commercial building repair so it is  perfectly reasonable for me to have Joker 101 kit of duct tape, rope, moving blankets, drop cloths, crowbars, et al …  I teach stage sword fighting so I need the assortment of unbreakable, painted to look real, polycarbonate swords and battle axes.  The full sized papisan cushion is for prat falls in acting.  The electronics testing equipment is for when I work on computer systems for clients.  The infrared camcorders are for when I go out on a paranormal or cryptid investigation.  The machetes are for when I do any land clearing work.  The extra large nitrile hospital gloves are for when my client is a medical facility.  Everyone has a can of WD40.  The mini compressors are for when people get flats on the job sites.   The wood chisels are for hanging doors the right way.  The portable propane torch is for loosening stuck metal nuts.  The fishing pole with line is for the rare chance I might get to sneak off.

See, all perfectly explainable.  I am merely a well-rounded person with lots of interests and not an international double naught man of mystery …..

Under the fog and full moon …

Friday night, under a full moon, with full fog, and lightning in the background, I attended the Malice in Memphis (www.maliceinmemphis.com) writer’s group retreat at a lovely location in a private park surrounded by deep woods.  Sometimes the real world hands you better props that anything you can write.  Thank you to the entire MIM group for an incredible evening of Q&A and a very spirited discussion of  scripting and elevator pitches.  Their latest book is Elmwood: Stories To Die For.  They take real historical locations and add murder most foul.  Let’s just say that lunch out with these good people is quite the experience.

This morning, I had the privilege of being a panelist for the Desoto Writers Alliance at the Southaven, MS Library for a mini-conference on publishing.  These are the types of events that restore your faith in the publishing business.  Lots of people with great questions.  Seeing so many people eager to dive into the business makes you look forward to what they will produce.  The best part of the day was learning how many genres were represented in the audience.  As long as there are novices willing to learn, we will always have new books to look forward to.

I am also going to reveal my secret project over the last few weeks.  I have been working on a a solve the murder mystery game.  I am happy to report that I believe I have the system worked out and the game will be played for fabulous prizes at the upcoming MCFC convention (www.memphiscfc.com).
