Pirates

Time is fleeting ….

Time is not just flying by right now.  It is leaping forward in huge gaps.  I can not believe it is October already.  Well, at least the heat is breaking and we can get down to some reasonable temperatures.

Geektankradio.com has been going just fine.  The show continues to grow and spread across the globe.  Seriously, the show is now searchable on the I Heart Radio/Media’s app.  That is allowing the world to discover the madness that is the Geek Patrol.  If you haven’t heard the show, click over and check it out.  It has lots of geeky news and pop culture.

The Fix It Up Show is just too much fun.  Joe and I keep discussing the foibles of do-it-yourself and other topics of home care.  The callers are great and we literally have months of material and stories to try to cover.  Joe now thinks he can stump me one of these days.  So far, I get him every time.  Listen to the show, come up with a question or two for me and call into the show and be live on the air with me Saturday mornings from 8 to 9 in the morning 600 WREC AM and 92.1 FM.

The Mid-South Pyrate Blades were featured by the Hooks Central Public Library and The Friends of the Library last Sunday for their Talk Like A Pirate show.  We had literally hundreds of guests come through the library.  Not only were we fighting this year, we also get a pirate games are with booths for the very popular games, Ring the Hooks ( get your ring on the suspended hand replacement hooks), Ring Around the Rat ( through a ringer around the standing rat mounted on a basket), Rat in a Basket (toss three rats into a swinging basket), and The Memory Game (match the pirate symbols etched on the bottom of cute little skulls).  Yeah, it was a great day.

I have a new story published in the “End of the World Potluck” edited by Robert J. Krog.  I enjoyed writing this one.  I love dark characters.

Here’s a snippet from my, “A Choice Made”.

“I’m here, just like you asked.” Thor Everdall stood at least 30 feet away and leaned backwards against a tombstone. The two men stood still as they sized each other up. Thor had gained some weight and had a different hair style, but, fundamentally, had not changed much. John, by contrast, had the hard look of man locked away for 15 years. His face wore too much stress and pain for his age.

“I didn’t think you would actually show up.” John had pictured the moment for all his jail time. Now, with a glowing sky and the world ending, it jumped from a dark dream to a hallucinatory reality.

“We don’t need to do this. You’re out. You could try to enjoy what little life we have left.” Thor remained relaxed in spite of the topic.

“Enjoy. Enjoy life. My life ended that night. The night you ruined everything in my life.”
“Really? The night I ruined your life? You mean the night you got so drunk that playing Russian roulette seemed like a good idea. The night you and Sarah got so drunk that pointing a gun at each other in bed was a good idea. That night? Is that the night you’re talking about?” Thor kept his voice level and his gestures to a minimum. He didn’t want to completely set off John just yet. However, he knew they were going to have to hash it out for a while.

John didn’t show any signs of anger, just intensity. “Yeah, the night you left bullets in my Colt 45 revolver. The night Sarah took one of those bullets to the chest.”

Soon is good

I am still digging out of the most impossible summer schedule.  It is amazing how things can grow to absorb every waking moment of your life.  I have to admit that when some says something like, “When you have a little spare time,” i just look at them them a dead pan “What do you want?”  It is just easier that way.

I admit that the Desk of Endless Tasks is getting a little deep.  Numerous projects are moving slowly through the grist mill.  With anything that resembles luck, numerous wonderful projects are going to wrap up very quickly.  I am eager to start making announcements.

GeekTankRadio.com continues to grow and find new listeners.  Now that you can go to the IHeartMedia.com and look up the show by name.  It is fun hearing from new fans around the world.

The Fix-It-Up show is seriously picking up steam.  Apparently, a lot of people around Memphis enjoy trying to stump Joe and I with their home repair and other projects.  So far we have had questions from raccoons in the attic to living edge tables.  This show is a live call in show and goes so fast to us in the studio.  It feels like we sign on and a few minutes late we are signing off.  We just can’t believe an hour has flown by.

I also managed to sneak in a live appearance at Movies by the Lake at the AgriCenter.  The movie that night was Pirates of the Caribbean, so our Mid-South Pyrate Blades got invited to be the opening entertainment.  We had a complete blast “fighting” with the kids.  I was amazed at how many people attended this event.  We have already been invited back to another event so we will have to be bigger and better.

Now that the rain has gone …

I have reached the age when my memories are clouding up the modern day.  For instance, I do remember numerous serious thunderstorms, tornadoes, and even the occasional hurricane, however, I also remember that most of the time, rain was just that, a nice rain for a few hours. Everything got watered, the creeks and streams rose a little bit, and the plants all looked really perky.  Now, it seems that most rain events are now storms absolutely dumping inches of water as fast as possible.  Of course, I could be wrong, but it certainly feels like I am right.

Been getting a lot of editing and pagination done.  We have numerous new projects coming up very quickly.  I am excited about both our books and media works.  If you haven’t checked out the new YouTube channel, dive in and enjoy.  Of course the more subscribers we get, the more stuff we can do. https://youtu.be/SOUhsMPdRBA

Sadly for Geek Tank Radio, Jessie has traded up jobs and has moved over to the TV world.  We will miss our defacto mum/Harley Quinn.

This coming Thursday night on Apr 19th at 7:00 pm the Writers Around Town will be at the Germantown Community Library.  The topic for the night is “Writing Series And Keeping It Fresh”.  I am having a blast with these seminars.

I am also happy to mention that our Pyrate Blades performance group keeps getting better.  Who knows, the pirate fight club may show up at a convention near you.

Full Moon Motivation …

It has been a wonderful full moon weekend.  The weather has been pretty good and the night sky has been spectacular. The best part is that I can watch the moon rise from my desk chair.

I am prepping for another convention appearance next weekend in Tupelo, MS. at Tupelo Titan Con ( http://tupelotitancon.com/ ).  Not only do I get to be a writer/radio host I also get to be there with Pyrate Blades.  Yes, there will some live sword fighting.  I am very excited.  This is going to a lot of fun.

This weekend a lot of video rendering and editing also got done.  The Desk of Endless Tasks has had a steady stream of projects coming and going.  I just love the sounds of productivity in the evening.

Geek Tank Radio ( http://www.geektankradio.com ) has continued to grow.  If you have been keeping with the show, you already know all about geek eats, science news, and shower thoughts.  If not, dive in and catch the madness 🙂

This weekend would not have been complete without the annual first yard beat down.  It is shocking just how rough the yard gets over the winter.  Now, the yard is beat into submission for a few days, the beds have been cleared and planted, and the blueberries are already blooming.  No bad at all.

And Media

It has been a dream of mine for many years to truly add media formats to the line up at Dark Oak Press (http://www.darkoakpress.com).  Thanks to Haunted New Orleans, we know have that dream up and running.  Just in time for “Vampires for Valentines” we can now add Haunted New Orleans: Vampires.

This weeks brine shrimp / sea monkey update: yes the little bits of flamingo food are living the marine crustacean version of the good life.  We are still months away from any type of live testing on the laser delivery systems.  I will keep the updates coming.

The Desk of Endless Tasks has been going well.  Several book projects are out in various stages of editing.  We should have some exciting announcements soon.

Pyrate Fight Club continues to get better and better.  The swords are moving faster and the routines are growing more complex every week.

Full moon rumours: No that is not me in the wolf running on it’s hind legs pictures.
No, I had nothing to do with that “paranormal” event at animal control.
No, my hair did not “grow back in”.
No, I don’t know where “Fluffy” is – now matter how plump and tender “Fluffy was …

Truly Endless

desk2mousepadIn spite of a couple of dedicated days at the black leather enhanced Desk of Endless Tasks, the tasks are proving to be more endless than usual.  I am indeed making progress and I do have the odd habit of starting with the most time consuming tasks first.  That way, it feels like you are picking speed as you pick off the tasks.  I also have a lovely sign over my desk that states, “Do not Confuse Effort With Results”.  Sometimes you just need to be reminded to just reach the “Done” status.  There are lots of tasks that sometimes you just have to pick a stop point.  Otherwise, I would keep messing with it for days.

Even my poor Intergalactic Truck Of Hauling has needed new seals and a new battery.  The poor old dear just needed to be shown a little love to keep it up and ready to dash to the rescue at a moments notice.  Well, with an active Pirate Fight Club, anything can and will happen.  Speaking of the PFC, everyone is doing so very well.  If you get a chance to see us in action, please show up and show us a bit of support.  It is an amazing amount of fun.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVu3BG3z-1I&t=404s

Still lots of great projects coming 🙂

Darkness has fallen ..

Darkness has fallen on my day, thank goodness.  Once it gets dark, it is time to slip into The Chair and pull up to The Desk of Endless Tasks.  Mentally, the shackles slip on and the Riding Crop of Productivity is now at the ready to spur on that which needs to be done.  While most of my cohorts are out at one event or another this weekend, I am home with no voice and a cough.  While I might not be getting into much mischief this weekend, I am moving a lot of work across this desk and that makes her happy.  And let’s face it, a cranky desk is a bad thing.

My friends at Malice in Memphis are having a good month.  Their new book Elmwood: Stories To Die For (http://www.darkoakpress.com/elmwood.html) is doing very well and their annual retreat is coming up.  Hopefully they will solve my murder.

Saturday, I get to be a panelist for the Desoto Writer’s Alliance.  I love events like this.  We answer questions and, most importantly, meet new people with an interest in the business.

The seminars are growing.  If can sneak out and attend, please do, they are very informative and a lot of fun.

The Pirate Fight Club is progressing.  New recruits are getting in lots of sword time.  I can’t wait until they start scripting their own scenarios.

MCFC (http://memphiscfc.com/) is just right around the corner.  It is going to be an amazing event this year with the new venue.  I am most excited about the expanded theatre for the Living Cartoon.  I have been warned to bring the voices, we are going big this year.

For my next trick tonight, I am writing up a portable Murder Mystery to be played for fabulous prizes in an hour.  You versus a room full of suspects and detectives.  Think of it as a Clue RPG.

Upcoming Appearances:

November 3rd – Malice in Memphis

Pirates, books, a full moon, and so much more …

As I sit here at The Desk of Endless Tasks catching up from an amazing week, I am getting peeks of the nearly full moon through the blinds.  There is indeed something all about a full moon in October.  I know that logically, this full moon is just like all the others, but, it is just the thought that this is the full moon that signifies the full on shift to fall.  Yes it is almost enough to make you want to howl.

My adventure as a pirate was amazing.  A month of our hard work paid off and we had a wonderful “fight”.  Yes, there is video and, yes, it will get posted to the Dark Oak channel on YouTube.com.  I will post a link here next week.  However, we all looked fabulous as pirates.

New Orleans is next for ContraFlow  (http://contraflowscifi.org/) this weekend.  Not that I need an excuse to go to New Orleans, but this is a great convention run by great people and I am going to have a great time.  If you are in the area, stop by and join the madness!

Geek Tank Radio (https://geektankradio.wordpress.com/) just keeps getting bigger and better.  A quick shout out to our Canadian fans (we just found out we have).  The Geek Eats challenges are growing.  We tried the KitKat Pumpkin Spice flavor and they were pretty good, but I decided that if we are doing pumpkin spice, let’s do it right.  So, I made a couple of batches of mini loafs of pumpkin bread.  It is always a good feeling to leave the studio with an empty food transport.

Pirate For A Day

This coming Saturday, I get to return to a bit of stage with the Pirate Raid at the main library here in Memphis.  If you are in the area, please come out for the festivities.  As an appe-teaser, let’s just say that the battle between the buccaneers for Fortune and Glory and the enforcer for Capt. Hook will be served with a lot of HAM.  It is going to be quite the show.

Now that I have said that, let’s take a little look behind the curtain if you will.  Just what does it take to put on a show like this?  First of all, there are the costumes.  Some are far more difficult than others, but they are all a lot of work.  Not only do they have to look the part, but the actors have to be able to move and work effectively in them.  Next, there are all the props.  All of that stuff comes from somewhere.  You don’t get to see the hours of hauling and setting up.  The “Glamorous Side of the Business” as I like to call it.

Finally, there is the acting and maybe even a bit action.  Most of the players you will meet have been playing their characters for years and do them with practiced ease.  However, this time, there will be a sword fight.  What you get to see will be a short, entertaining, and hopefully thrilling bit of theatrics.  What you didn’t get the see was the weeks of practice.  The scripting of every single move, every single foot step.  You don’t get to see all of the sore muscles and bruised knuckles as the actors learn the choreography.  You don’t get to see the sweat of trying to get it right changing to the elation of knowing the show is going to be fabulous.

Come and enjoy the show.  We have put a lot of heart and sweat into making it look seamless and natural.  And yes, those swords really do hurt 🙂
